Chandeleur 2005 To Date

8/23/05: Fishing at Chandeleur has been great so far this year. I think Hurricane Ivan may have actually helped the fishery by allowing some water to pass through the island. I am sure this will all build back over time as the island regenerated after Hurricane George. The grass beds are beginning to flourish again. Speck action has been pretty consistent. Although keeper size fish are a bit fewer than earlier this year, there are plenty of undersized fish being caught and released. We are also making an effort to release the larger trout so the brood stock can flourish for the future(hope others will do likewise). We have found fish all along the chain from Schooner Harbor down to Smack Channel. All caught on artificials - DOA's in chartreuse, glow and strawberry or any combination of these colors have done best. The reds have been around also but not in large numbers. I am hoping we can hold off the storms for the rest of the year as we don't need another July. The tropics have been surpisingly quiet recently, as far as this area is concerned, I just hope this is not the "calm before the storm".
